Tips for Touring a Senior Living Community

The decision to move to a senior community requires research and planning.  One of the first steps when considering a move is to contact the community and arrange a tour.  Preparing your thoughts and questions before the tour is key.  Here are some simple tips to consider when touring a senior living community:

Come prepared with a list of your non-negotiables

Each community will operate in its own unique way and will offer a variety of programs and services. Decide on what’s most important to you when it comes to your next home – whether it’s activities, spiritual life, access to healthcare onsite, etc. A priority list will help you ask the right questions and decide what community is best suited for your lifestyle.

Educate yourself about resident life

Try to picture yourself living in the community during your tour. Ask what a day in the life of a resident looks like and see how it aligns with your present lifestyle. Request an activities calendar to see what programs the community offers to its residents.  It would also be helpful to ask to speak with the Activities Director and see what exciting and unique activities they offer and how often.

Interact with staff and residents

While you’re touring, engage with residents and staff members to see what the community culture is like. Take note of how people greet you and if the community seems to be welcoming to new residents and employees.

Try it for yourself!

Find a way to truly get a taste for life within the community. Try a meal in the dining room or attend an event hosted by the community. Take every opportunity to interact with the current residents and staff for an immersive touring experience at each community.
