Creative Ways to Connect During Holidays

2020 has been a monumental year that has changed the way we go about most things in our life, including the holidays. As the pandemic wears on and interactions with your loved ones are limited to video calls and window visits, it can feel challenging to get into the holiday spirit. If you’re feeling uninspired, then continue reading for 5 creative ways you and your loved ones can connect virtually!

Write a Letter/Christmas Card

One of the best ways to connect with your loved ones when you can’t be together is by writing them a letter. Pick up some beautiful Christmas cards or send out a handmade card with a note reminding your loved ones that you’re thinking of them during the holidays. This is a great way to fill your time and will surely brighten anyone’s day when they receive it! Residents at The Christian Village at Mason have been using their creative talents to make beautiful Christmas cards by hand. Our staff is always available to assist residents, especially when it comes to connecting with their family members.

Virtual Christmas Crafting

Hop on a Zoom call and work on a Christmas-themed craft together. You and your family can decorate stockings together or paint Christmas tree ornaments. Some of the most meaningful Christmas presents are the ones handmade by the people you love. Chat with your family or friends on a video call while you create a handmade Christmas present. This activity will help you bond with your loved ones while simultaneously giving you a new Christmas decoration or gift for someone!

Cookie Decorating Competition

If your family loves some friendly competition, consider hosting a virtual cookie or gingerbread decorating competition! Get everyone together through a video call and enjoy each other’s company while decorating delicious cookies. Once everyone’s finished decorating, judge the gingerbread houses or cookies, and decide on a winner. Once you make the cookies, swap them with each other, or mail the cookies as a special treat to your friends and family! This year, The Christian Village at Mt Healthy will be decorating cookies with our residents for a delicious and festive treat! You can learn more about our events each month in our Village News.

Christmas Movie Marathon

Ask your loved ones what their favorite Christmas movie is, and then treat yourself to a Christmas Movie Marathon. Snuggle up in some blankets with hot cocoa in hand and then binge the recommended Christmas movies. Once your viewing party is over, talk to your friends and family about your favorite parts of the movie. Share with them what you thought of it. The movie conversation will surely make you feel at home and as if you’re watching the movie side by side. Residents in Assisted Living at the Christian Village at Mason are watching a different Christmas movie each week during our “Friday Flicks”. We love to enjoy Christmas movies together to spread Christmas cheer! Learn more about our life and activities available to residents at The Christian Village Communities on our website

Enjoy Virtual Christmas Bingo

We love playing Bingo in the Village.  Residents tune in to our community channel 3 times a week for our virtual Bingo. Send a Christmas themed bingo sheet to your friends and family, and then hop on the phone to see who will win. Try out some of these Christmas bingo sheets to get you started. This is a great way to get everyone in the Christmas spirit and to enjoy some quality time during family video calls.

While the holidays may look different this year, it doesn’t mean you have to stop celebrating familiar traditions or enjoying the company of your loved ones. With some creative thinking and positivity, virtual visits with your loved ones can truly brighten the holidays and make this a Christmas to remember!
